RELEASED: March 23, 2009

postcard for Let's Do LunchEAU CLAIRE —The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's assistant vice chancellor for research and sponsored programs and director of the Center of Excellence for Faculty and Undergraduate Student Research Collaboration will describe the university's undergraduate research program during an Alumni Association luncheon this month.

Dr. Karen Havholm's presentation, titled "Student Scholars Describe Their Work," will run from noon-1 p.m. March 25 at Sweetwater's Restaurant in Eau Claire.

Havholm also will introduce three UW-Eau Claire student researchers, who will describe their diverse research experiences. The students will discuss their research on the ecology of algae in mountain streams, the impact of Super Bowl advertising and the psychology of ethical decision-making. They also will discuss the ways their research experiences have affected them.

The three students — along with 472 other students — will present the results of their scholarly projects April 27-29 during UW-Eau Claire Student Research Day in Zorn Arena.

In her role as director of the Center of Excellence for Faculty and Undergraduate Research Collaboration, Havholm manages the funds to support student research, primarily by providing student stipends. A large portion of the funds are provided by the students themselves through the differential tuition program.
Prior to moving to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, Havholm was a 13-year veteran of the geology department, where as professor she mentored one to four students annually in scholarly projects in sedimentology.

The March 25 presentation is part of the Alumni Association's "Let's Do Lunch" program which is open to the public. The $10 cost includes the presentation, buffet, beverage, tax and tip. To reserve tickets, contact the Alumni Association at alumni@uwec.edu or 715-836-3266.
