EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire junior Maria White, La Crescent, Minn., was crowned Miss Harborview 2009 on Jan. 31 in Onalaska.

The title gives White, who also was crowned Miss La Crescent in 2005, a chance to compete for the title of Miss Wisconsin (June 18-20) and possibly Miss America.

White competed against three other contestants in interview, on stage question, lifestyle and fitness, talent, and evening wear. She performed Nat King Cole's "Orange Colored Sky" for her talent, and her interview focused on her platform, "Performing Arts: They're Not Just for Entertainment."

White plans to promote her platform by partnering with after-school programs to bring the arts to students who may not experience them at home, and by continuing her position as a publicist for the UW-Eau Claire theatre department. She also will volunteer with the Children's Miracle Network as part of her responsibilities to the Miss America Organization.

A story and photo about White's title was featured in a story in Eau Claire's Leader Telegram.
