EAU CLAIRE — Students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to participate in the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's third annual International Poetry Reading, scheduled for 7-9 p.m. April 29 in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center.

All those interested can submit a short poem in any language but modern English to event organizers.

The poetry reading is sponsored by the department of foreign languages and the Center for International Education. UW-Eau Claire's English Festival (April 27-May 1) will host the event, along with a reception following the reading.

The inaugural 2007 event, conceived and organized by assistant professor of English and women's studies Dr. Audrey Fessler and associate professor of foreign languages Dr. Jeff Vahlbusch, included poems in more than 30 different ancient and modern languages. The 2008 event featured 42 readers and 35 languages from Akkadian to Uzbek. Audience members received booklets with poems printed in their original languages, along with English translations.

"We have been thrilled by the community's response these past two years," Vahlbusch said. "People were obviously excited about sharing their favorite poems and the beauty of their own languages. We are hoping for an even bigger response this year."

To participate, readers should send an e-mail to Vahlbusch with "poetry reading" in the subject line. The message should include the reader's name, e-mail address and chosen language. Readers will be scheduled as time permits with as many languages included as possible.

Prospective readers should send Vahlbusch an electronic copy of a poem (under 40 lines) with an English translation in a Microsoft Word file. Poems should be sent with bibliographic information and translation as soon as possible, but midnight April 15 is the deadline.

Readers must arrive at the Council Fire Room by 6:40 p.m. April 29 ready to read the poem in its original language.

For more information or to submit a poem, contact Vahlbusch at vahlbujb@uwec.edu.
