UW-Eau Claire's Annual Relay for Life Set for March 27-28

RELEASED: March 9, 2009

Relay for Life logoEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Colleges Against Cancer organization will host the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event from 7 p.m. March 27 to 7 a.m. March 28. The event will be held at the McPhee Ade Olson Center Track on upper campus.

The Relay for Life is a community effort to raise funds for cancer research, education and patient services. The event resembles an athletic relay with teams of eight to 15 people taking turns running or walking around the track throughout the night. Other activities are planned such as theme laps, eating contests, juice pong, a Texas hold'em tournament and a frozen T-shirt contest. There will be live bands, a DJ and a performance by The Innocent Men.

Teams from companies, organizations, schools or groups of friends collect donations to go to the American Cancer Society. Forty-seven teams are registered with a total of 376 participants. This year CAC hopes to register 65 teams and raise $65,000.

The event will begin with an opening ceremony at 7 p.m. to introduce the American Cancer Society and the goals of Relay for Life. At 7:30 p.m., cancer survivors will kick off the ceremony with a lap around the track. Luminaries surrounding the track will be lit at 10 p.m. in honor of cancer victims and survivors.

Donation information, registration forms and other information can be found at the Relay for Life Web site.
