UW-Eau Claire to Host Literacy Workshop for
Eau Claire Middle School Students

RELEASED: March 3, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — Students who are part of literacy programs at two Eau Claire middle schools will participate in a literacy workshop March 7 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The workshop — coordinated by UW-Eau Claire education faculty and students — will run from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. in the Campus School on lower campus.

About 36 students who are part of the Literacy Leaders and Building Bridges programs at South and Delong middle schools will be picked up at their schools by a limo (provided by Pro Limo Services) and transported to campus for a day of activities and learning about UW-Eau Claire and its programs.

UW-Eau Claire student volunteers and faculty will work with the English language learners throughout the day.

Middle school students who are Literacy Leaders are encouraged to spend time reading with younger siblings and friends to help improve their reading skills. During the workshop on campus, they will paint a literacy mural and practice a reader's theater, which they have been creating in recent weeks. The projects will be shared with their younger literacy mentees during an April 2 celebration at the L.E. Phillips Public Library.

Participants in the UW-Eau Claire literacy workshop will receive quality books at their reading level as well as a collection of books to read to their siblings at home.

Literacy Leaders are advised by UW-Eau Claire education students. The program is built on the belief that reading with and to others will improve reading success.

The Building Bridges program is a partnership between UW-Eau Claire and the Eau Claire Area Hmong Mutual Assistance Association that brings together student mentors and Hmong students who are new to the United States.

For more information about the March 7 event or the partnership programs, contact Lucianne Boardman at 715-836-5964 or boardml@uwec.edu.
