SUBJECT: Seventy to attend Grandparents University at UW-Eau Claire
Area grandparents and their grandchildren will participate in a unique intergenerational learning experience from 8:45 a.m.-4 p.m. June 20 during the first Grandparents University at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. All available spots for the daylong event have been filled.
During the event, grandparents and grandchildren together will attend classes taught by UW-Eau Claire faculty on such topics as "Backyard Star Gazers," "Think Small: Nanoscience," "Shakespeare Alive!" and "Ancient Origins of the Alphabet." All 70 participants also will attend opening and closing keynote classes. Dr. Erik Hendrickson, professor of physics and astronomy, will present the opening class, "The Pressures On: Amazing Science Demonstrations Using Pressure!" Rob Reid, senior lecturer of foundations of education, will present the closing keynote class, "Making Literature Come Alive for All Generations."
Dr. Jeanie Geurink, UW-Eau Claire assistant professor of communication and journalism, helped bring Grandparents University to UW-Eau Claire after attending the event at UW-Madison with her granddaughter for five years. She created a three-credit events planning course in which UW-Eau Claire students helped plan Grandparents University. The event also is supported by the UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association and UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education.
To learn more about Grandparents University or to arrange to take photos or videotape during the event, contact Jeanie Geurink at 715-836-5608, 608-347-9116 or Phil Huelsbeck, College of Arts and Sciences outreach specialist with UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education, at 715-836-5400, 715-836-3636.
