RELEASED: June 16, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Continuing Education/UW-Extension has been awarded an unrestricted educational grant for $3,100 from ConvaTec, a company that specializes in products designed to meet the needs of ostomy and wound patients and the health care professionals who care for them.

The funding will be used to bring Barbara Braden, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN, author of the Braden Scale for Predicting Pressure Sore Risk, to Eau Claire as the keynote speaker at an upcoming program for caregivers from all heath care settings involved in the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers.

"Pressure Ulcers: Speaking the Same Language Across the Health Care Continuum" will be held from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Plaza Hotel & Suites Conference Center.

Designed for physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses (clinical and administration), physical therapists, licensed practical nurses, pharmacists, dieticians and physicians, the program will examine best practices in pressure ulcer prevention and treatment for hospital, long-term care, rehabilitation, home health care and patient/family education settings. Topics to be covered include:

  • Using the Braden Scale in designing interventions to prevent pressure ulcer development.
  • Strategies to prevent and treat pressure ulcers in all settings — hospitals, long-term care, rehabilitation, home health care and outpatient education.
  • Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) regulations, quality indicators and documentation in pressure ulcer care.

"We are very excited to bring Dr. Barbara Braden, an internationally known expert in pressure ulcer prevention, to Eau Claire," said Peggy Ore, UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education nursing and health sciences program manager. "The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services no longer reimburse medical facilities for the care of pressure ulcers and other hospital acquired conditions. This workshop will offer a great opportunity for health care providers in our region to talk with Dr. Braden and local experts about ways to save money and save lives by improving the quality of care they provide to people with or at risk for pressure ulcers."

The cost to attend is $119 per person for registrations received before Sept. 15 and $139 per person for registrations received after that date. The cost includes continuing education units, instruction, program materials, refreshments and lunch.

To register, obtain additional program information or request reasonable accommodations for disabilities, please call Continuing Education at 715-836-3636 or toll-free at 866-893-2423, use the Wisconsin Relay System (711), send e-mail to ce@uwec.edu or visit their Web site.
