Fifty-five high school students from west-central Wisconsin and Minneapolis-St. Paul are participating this week in a five-day Blugold Beginnings camp on the UW-Eau Claire campus.
The camp is part of UW-Eau Claire's precollege outreach programming aimed at encouraging young at-risk students to pursue higher education. The camp, which runs June 14-18,
will include academic skills sessions; science lessons; leadership seminars; information sessions on financial aid, college admissions and career services; photography lessons; an evening bonfire and more. Blugold Beginnings programming is in support of UW-Eau Claire's strategic initiative to increase diversity on campus and in response to Gov. Jim Doyle's challenge to UW System schools to participate in the national KnowHow2Go program. For more

Fifteen middle-school students from Eau Claire schools will attend the Hmong Literacy Program June 15-25 on the UW-Eau Claire campus
. The program, open to students of all ethnic backgrounds, emphasizes Hmong language, history and culture with the goals of improving participants' academic skills and encouraging healthy and inclusive cultural identities in all students. The Hmong Literacy Program is sponsored by UW-Eau Claire's College of Education and Human Sciences. For more information, contact the program director, Dr. Christin DePouw at 715-836-5587.

UW-Eau Claire's 2009 Summer Events series continues today, June 15
, with Jazz at Noon and Music on the Mall concerts on the Central Campus Mall. Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnics to the concerts. More about the concerts and other Summer Events:

Jazz at Noon will take place at noon weekdays through June 26 and feature UW-Eau Claire student and alumni musicians. (Rain site: The Terrace, Davies Center)
Dennis Warner and the D's will perform today's Music on the Mall concert at 7 p.m. Music on the Mall concerts will take place Monday evenings through July 28. (Rain site: The Cabin, Davies Center)
• The Fresh Start Farmers Mart will run from 7:30-11:30 a.m. June 18 on the Central Campus Mall.
• A Summer Sounds concert featuring Owen Lovell and Friends will be held from 2-3 p.m. June 21 in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Summer Sounds concerts will take place Sunday afternoons through July 26, with no concert July 5.
