RELEASED: June 8, 2009

Calendar Item
Classes begin today, June 8, for students enrolled in UW-Eau Claire's eight-week summer session, which runs through Friday, July 31.

Story/photo idea
Beginning today, more than 2,000 new UW-Eau Claire freshmen and their parents will visit campus during 15 June orientation sessions (and one session on Aug. 24). The new freshmen will learn more about their academic programs, register for fall classes and learn about university resources and campus life. Their parents and guests will interact with fellow parents, current students and university staff. For more information contact Jacqueline Bonneville, UW-Eau Claire's coordinator for new student orientation, at 715-836-3487 or bonnevjk@uwec.edu.

Story idea
Two area UW-Eau Claire students are among those participating in a new summer chemistry research program funded by a highly competitive National Science Foundation grant. Tim Andrews, Eau Claire, a senior chemistry major, and Erin Stuckert, New Auburn, a junior chemistry and math major, are two of four UW-Eau Claire students serving as research mentors to four students from regional two-year colleges. The students, under the direction of UW-Eau Claire chemistry faculty members, are collaborating in pairs on research projects in the areas of analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry; biochemistry; and materials science. Two goals of the new program are to offer research opportunities to students from institutions that cannot provide them and increase the diversity of students pursuing careers in the sciences. For more information contact program director Dr. Alan Gengenbach, UW-Eau Claire associate professor of chemistry, at 715-836-5518 or gengenaj@uwec.edu.
