Departments Merge in UW-Eau Claire's
College of Education and Human Sciences

RELEASED: July 24, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — Two departments, foundations of education and curriculum and instruction, in the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire have merged into one department of education studies, college officials have announced.

"The merger will be beneficial on several levels, enhancing the efficiency of operations in our teacher education program, removing barriers to cooperative working relationships between faculty and helping students by providing better program cohesion and increasing the number of available academic advisers," said Dr. Dwight C. Watson, associate dean of the university's teacher education program.

In May, the UW-Eau Claire University Senate approved the elimination of the foundations of education and curriculum and instruction departments and the creation of the education studies department. The changes previously were approved by the departments and the College of Education and Human Sciences Academic Curriculum Committee.

Watson, formerly chair of both the foundations of education and curriculum and instruction departments, will serve as chair of the newly formed education studies department.

Gail Scukanec, dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences, said the merger is a good move for the college.

"While change can be difficult, we believe this merger will increase the efficiency of our teacher education program and will enable us to better serve our students," she said.
