EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Continuing Education will present "When the Victim is a Child: Recognizing and Responding to Child Abuse" from 12:30-4:30 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Plaza Inn and Suites in Eau Claire.

Victor Vieth, director of the National Child Protection Training Center at Winona State University, is the keynote speaker. A former prosecutor in rural Minnesota, Vieth has worked in the field of child protection for nearly 22 years and has trained thousands of child protection professionals in child abuse investigation, prosecution and prevention. He also has been named to the President's Honor Roll of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children.

The program is designed for educators, attorneys, law enforcement professionals, victim witness staff members, guardian ad litems, medical providers, social workers, counselors, psychologists, day care providers, parents, people who work with children and other mandated reporters. Topics covered will include physical abuse, emotional maltreatment, sexual abuse and neglect. Vieth will share ideas for implementing policies in schools, churches and other settings to minimize sex offender abuse of children. He also will discuss the dynamics that make it particularly difficult for children to disclose their abuse.

"We are fortunate to be able to bring Victor Vieth back to Eau Claire," said Julie Aminpour, UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education program manager. "Victor is one of the nation's top experts in the field of child abuse investigation, and he has dedicated his career to its prevention. His book, 'Unto the Third Generation,' was a bold initiative with the goal of ending child abuse in the United States over the course of a century."

The date of the workshop was chosen to run concurrently with the Sept. 18-20 Healing Field presented by the Exchange Clubs of Eau Claire — a display of 1,400 U.S. flags representing the number of lives lost to child abuse in America each year. The display may be viewed before or after the workshop along Clairemont Avenue, a few blocks east of the Plaza Hotel and Suites.

The workshop fee is $49 per person for registration materials received before Sept. 11 and $69 per person for those received after that date. The cost includes instruction, program materials, refreshments and continuing education units.

To register, obtain additional program information or request reasonable accommodations for disabilities, call UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education at 715-836-3636 or 866-893-2423, use the Wisconsin Relay System (711), send e-mail to ce@uwec.edu or visit their Web site.
