Story Idea
UW-Eau Claire mathematics students are using what they learn through research to help Eau Claire and other communities in practical, measurable ways. The students recently worked with Dr. Simei Tong, associate professor of mathematics, to design a mathematical model that can predict the most efficient method for evacuating a hospital in an emergency situation. When they applied their model to Luther Hospital in Eau Claire, they identified a procedure that would evacuate the hospital 23 percent faster than by simply taking patients to the nearest available elevators. UW-Eau Claire's 2009 Summer Events series continues today, July 20:

  • Mike Quick with special guests Randy Sabien and Tiit Raid will perform today's Music on the Mall concert at 7 p.m. (Rain site: The Cabin, Davies Center)
  • The Shakespeare and Others in the Park series will present poetry readings July 22 by four distinguished members of the area's literary community. Jim Larson, Stephen Maddox, Norma Desprez and Yvette Viets Flaten will read from their works beginning at 7 p.m. on the Central Campus Mall.
  • The Fresh Start Farmers Mart will run from 7:30-11:30 a.m. July 23 on the Central Campus Mall.
  •  A Summer Sounds concert featuring soprano Mitra Sadeghpour and Friends will be held from 2-3 p.m. July 26 in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. This will be the final performance for the light classical Summer Sounds series, presented in cooperation with the department of music and theatre arts.
