EAU CLAIRE — A retired elementary school teacher, who is a University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire graduate, and her husband have established two scholarships with the UW-Eau Claire Foundation to benefit students in the College of Education and Human Sciences at UW-Eau Claire.

The gift from Jan and Roy Fuerstenberg will support two $1,000 scholarships to be awarded to promising teacher education majors at UW-Eau Claire. One of the Jan Fuerstenberg Education Scholarships will be designated for an elementary education major and the other for a secondary education major.

Jan, who received her master's degree in elementary education from UW-Eau Claire in 1994, said she hopes the scholarships will help the next generation of teachers.

"I'm a firm believer in education and want to give this opportunity to someone so they can experience the joy of working with children," Jan said. "I established the one scholarship because of my love of elementary teaching and the other in recognition that some have a calling to work with older children and should have that opportunity, too."

Jan, who received her bachelor's degree from Winona State University in 1968, taught for 36 years and served as a first-grade teacher for most of her career. She taught in Independent School District 197 in West St. Paul, Minn., for 11 years; at Cleghorn Elementary School in Eau Claire for 20 years; and at Putnam Heights Elementary School in Eau Claire for five years.
