Tickets Still Available for Aldo Leopold Banquet

RELEASED: Jan. 30, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — There is still time to purchase tickets for the fourth annual Aldo Leopold Banquet, set for 5-10 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Westgate Sportsman Club in Eau Claire.

The popular banquet — collaboratively hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Environmental Adventure Center — honors the conservation legacy of Aldo Leopold, celebrates his life and writings, and aims to further foster the idea of developing a land ethic.

The banquet's rustic-themed menu includes wild game dishes as well as vegetarian options. Cost is $20 per person for UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and community members and $12 for students. The event is limited to 400 participants.

The acclaimed Chris Silver Bluegrass Band will perform at the banquet, and the pre-dinner program will feature the following guest speakers.

  • Matt Frank, secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
  • Tex Hawkins, a watershed biologist representing the National Fish and Wildlife Refuge in Winona, Minn.
  • Kenny Salwey, author and star of the Emmy-award-winning film "Mississippi: Tales of the Last River Rat," which recently won seven international wildlife film awards.
  • Dr. Sean Hartnett, UW-Eau Claire professor of geography.
  • Dr. John Hildebrand, UW-Eau Claire professor of English and author of "Reading the River: A Voyage Down the Yukon" and "Mapping the Farm: A Chronicle of a Family."
  • Sophomore Amy Brickheimer, Marathon, a student employee at the EAC.

Hartnett and Hildebrand teach the Aldo Leopold land ethic in their classes and are involved in efforts to create an awareness and appreciation for the lower Chippewa River corridor. Brickheimer, who is involved with the Student Rod and Gun and Hobnailers Outdoor Adventure Clubs, will represent youth and the next generation.

Aldo Leopold Weekend is a collaborative effort of The Aldo Leopold Foundation, select faculty at UW-Eau Claire, the Wisconsin and Minnesota departments of natural resources and many area agencies, organizations and businesses who support the development of a land ethic.

All proceeds from the banquet benefit the Environmental Adventure Center Student Leadership Fund.

Tickets for the Aldo Leopold Banquet are available at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727 or 1-800-949-UWEC, or at the Westgate Sportsman Club, 715-832-4548.
