Hubbard Street 2 dancers perform "Float."

EAU CLAIRE — Hubbard Street 2, a vibrant company of young dancers, will perform Feb. 10 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The Artists Series will present the performance at 7:30 p.m. in Kjer Theatre.

Hubbard Street 2, the second company of the ever-lively Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, is made of seven dancers between the ages of 17 and 25. Hubbard Street 2 presents a variety of dance techniques, movement styles and artistic approaches that reflect influences from ballet to hip-hop to improvisation. The program will feature full company works ("The Restless") as well as more intimate pieces ("Float").

Each year, Hubbard Street 2 reaches more than 35,000 people through performances in schools, theaters and community centers. Since its creation in 1997, the company has earned a reputation as a respected training ground for young dancers and choreographers. Hubbard Street 2 has been honored with invitations to perform at such prestigious venues as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Joyce Soho and North Carolina School of the Arts. The company's first international appearance in South Africa was followed by multiple appearances in Germany as well as Luxembourg and Switzerland.

As part of its mission to identify and nurture young choreographers, Hubbard Street 2 initiated a national choreographic competition in 1999. Each year the three winners of this competition receive weeklong residencies in which they create an original work for the company and conduct master classes for the community.

Hubbard Street 2 is an important component of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago's education and community programs, which work with teachers to integrate dance and movement into their curriculums, expose students to the expressive world of dance, and team with other arts organizations in Chicago on interdisciplinary collaborations.

Tickets for the Artists Series performance are $17 for the public, $15 for those 62 and older and UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff, and $7 for those 17 and younger and UW System or CVTC students. Tickets for students are half-price, $3.50, until the day of the event. On the day of the event, students must pay the full student-ticket price.

Patrons may charge tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call 715-836-3727 or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free 800-949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.

While in Eau Claire, the Hubbard Street 2 dancers will present a master class for contemporary ballet. Free and open to the public, the class will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Feb. 9 in the dance studio (room 105) of the McPhee Center on UW-Eau Claire's upper campus.

The Artists Series is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin. Wisconsin Public Radio and Community Television have contributed generous promotional support. Best Western Trail Lodge Hotel & Suites (715-838-9989) at 3340 Mondovi Road is the exclusive accommodations partner for the Artists Series.

In addition to the Artists Series season sponsors, Hubbard Street 2 is supported by the Performing Arts Fund, a program of Arts Midwest funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts which believes a great nation deserves great art, with additional contributions from Wisconsin Arts Board, General Mills Foundation, and Land O'Lakes Foundation.

Funded by the students of UW-Eau Claire, the Artists Series is administered by the Activities and Programs office.
