EAU CLAIRE — Hybrid guru Chris Schneider will present an Alternative Fuel Vehicle seminar from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 27 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The event is free and open to the public.

A video discussing alternative fuel vehicles will begin at 10:30 a.m. in Davies Theatre of Davies Center, followed by a question-and-answer session with experts on electric and natural gas technologies. A natural gas vehicle and a neighborhood electric vehicle will be on display on the Central Campus Mall.

Schneider is an expert on hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles. He has toured the Midwest advocating the benefits of choosing transportation that will have the least impact on the environment and building a new American energy future.

Every gallon of gasoline a vehicle burns puts 20 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, Schneider said. The EPA estimates that a vehicle that achieves 25 miles per gallon vs. 20 miles per gallon prevents the release of about 15 tons of greenhouse gas pollution during the lifetime of the vehicle, he said.

Petroleum imports cost Americans about $2 billion a week, Schneider said. If everyone drove cars that were 30 percent more efficient, it would reduce the cost by $600 million a week, he said.

Schneider, an advocate of T. Boone Pickens' Plan for Energy Independence, said America is home to the world's greatest wind power corridor and has abundant reserves of natural gas and renewable methods of production. The Pickens' plan encourages the use of wind and solar energy to displace the use of natural gas in homes and businesses, he said.
