RELEASED: Jan. 16, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — Students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire are encouraged to apply for prestigious national scholarships, including the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarships.

The Cooke scholarships are available to undergraduate students in their final year before graduation and to recent alumni who are not already initiated in a graduate degree program.

The foundation awards Graduate Scholarships and the Award for Graduate Studies in the Arts. Both scholarships award up to $50,000 to students beginning their first graduate or professional degree program in fall 2009.

UW-Eau Claire will nominate two students for the Graduate Scholarship and one student for the Graduate Studies in the Arts to the foundation, said Patricia Quinn of UW-Eau Claire's Graduate Studies.

To be eligible for the scholarships applicants must be a college senior or recent graduate, have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or above, plan to begin a graduate degree program in the fall and be nominated by his or her university.

Quinn is available to meet with interested students and faculty mentors to assist in the application process. Quinn can be reached at 715-836-6046 or quinnpa@uwec.edu.

Applicants must submit completed applications by noon March 10 to Dr. Andrew Phillips, dean of Graduate Studies, 212 Schofield Hall, to be considered for nomination to the foundation. Interested students are encouraged to begin the application process early, Quinn said.
