New Chippewa Valley Internship Web Site Launched

RELEASED: Jan. 15, 2009

EAU CLAIRE —A new service sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Chippewa Valley Technical College, the Eau Claire Area School District and the Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce will help employers explore the possibilities of offering internships to students in the Eau Claire area.

Launched in fall 2008, Chippewa Valley Internship Central is a Web site designed to help businesses create and offer internships to area students, said Sheila Miller, an intern in the Career Services office at UW-Eau Claire.

The service provides employers with an internship "road map" and helps them understand the capabilities of interns, Miller said. Interns provide businesses and organizations with motivated workers and extra help, and provide staff with opportunities to develop their supervisory skills, Miller said. Interns benefit from the opportunity to gain career experience, use skills developed in their classes and network with people in their respected careers, she said.

Those businesses and organizations that use UW-Eau Claire interns quickly come to see the value of having talented and ambitious students working with them, Miller said.

"The Chamber has used two UW-Eau Claire interns for the past 10 years in public affairs and graphic design," said Bob McCoy, president and CEO of the Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce. "The students have done an excellent job each year in the areas. These positions have become very valuable for the Chamber and I do not know how we could operate without them. The graphic design intern actually does all of our publications."

The site was created as more schools and businesses require internships as part of their graduation requirements or to become employed, Miller said. The resource offers project planning worksheets, lists of possible job duties and other resources, she said. It also features an e-mail link, which offers additional assistance, she said.

Employers who are interested in learning more about internship possibilities can e-mail cvinternconnect@uwec.edu, visit the Web site or contact Jeanne Skoug, director of Career Services, at 715-836-3345.
