EAU CLAIRE — Six student composers at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire have been given the opportunity to collaborate with nationally known artists.

The students of Dr. Ethan Wickman, assistant professor of music, will present "The Sounds of Space: Composing Music for Zeitgeist New Music Ensemble" at 7:30 p.m. March 11 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The collaboration was born out of an existing relationship between Wickman and the members of Zeitgeist. The students were commissioned to write a piece that takes geography or the interplay of physical forces as its inspiration, Wickman said. The students received coaching from Zeitgeist throughout the writing process.

The pieces to be performed include "Angles of Repose" by Wickman; "Send My Regards to Charlie" by junior Aaron Hedenstrom, St. Paul, Minn.; "Wild Geese" by senior James Kellerman, Minneapolis; "Mid Ocean Ridge" by senior Caleb Price, Eau Claire; "Moraine" by senior Carl Schroeder, Plymouth; "Ozone" by senior Mary Webster, Boyd; and "From Here to Champaign" by senior Michael Wolter, Madison. Zeitgeist also will feature a work by John Cage.

"I hope they learn the practical aspects of collaborating with professionals: meeting deadlines, making readable and professional-looking scores and parts, hearing their music performed at a high level, and gaining confidence in their ability to communicate to players and audiences alike," Wickman said.

Zeitgeist, based out of St. Paul, Minn., is a chamber ensemble of percussion, piano and woodwinds committed to supporting and presenting the work of today's emerging and established composers. The group sponsors many workshops and programs in the Twin Cities area to promote composition and performance.

Members of Zeitgeist are percussionists Heather Barringer and Patti Cudd, woodwind player Pat O'Keefe and pianist Shannon Wettstein. Cudd and O'Keefe are both on the music faculty at UW-River Falls. Wettstein is on the faculty at Augsburg College and the New England Conservatory's Summer Institute for Contemporary Piano Performance.

"The Sounds of Space" was funded by UW-Eau Claire's department of music and theatre arts, a student/faculty research collaboration grant, and an Office of Research and Sponsored Programs grant for guest artists.

More information about Zeitgeist can be found on their Web site.
