EAU CLAIRE — The Vicki Lord Larson Faculty Research Fellowship for the communication sciences and disorders department of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire was awarded for the first time to a UW-Eau Claire assistant professor.

Dr. Marie Stadler, assistant professor of communication sciences and disorders, received the $5,000 award, which provides faculty a semester with reassigned teaching duties to pursue faculty-student collaborative research.

The UW-Eau Claire Foundation fellowship was created by Chancellor Emerita Vicki Lord Larson, who was a faculty member and former chair of the communication sciences and disorders department at UW-Eau Claire. It is the first fellowship that supports professional development of faculty at UW-Eau Claire.

"I am very pleased that Marie has received this award and will be able to devote concentrated time to an interesting research project and to the UW-Eau Claire students who will be working alongside her," Lord Larson said. "I am glad I can support endeavors like these that help faculty develop their full potential and offer students invaluable learning opportunities."

Stadler will conduct a collaborative research project in the Eau Claire Area School District that will examine the social communication network of students who use augmentative and alternative communication, strategies that assist people with severe communication disabilities to participate more fully in their social roles. Ten UW-Eau Claire graduate students will be paired with AAC users in the schools and will work with parents, teachers and speech language pathologists to enhance the social communication networks for these children.

"Marie is a deserving first recipient of this award," said Dr. Kristine Retherford, chair of the communication sciences and disorders department. "She has established an ambitious research agenda and this award will allow her to move forward with that agenda. We are very fortunate to be able to support faculty in the department with this award. The award recognizes the contributions that Vicki Lord Larson has made to this department and we are pleased to be able to honor her in this way."

Stadler graduated from UW-Eau Claire with a bachelor's degree in 1973, completed a master's degree at San Francisco State in 1983 and earned a doctoral degree in 2001 from the University of Minnesota. She was a faculty member at UW-Eau Claire from 1991-2001 and then returned full time in 2006.

"Vicki Lord Larson is an exceptional researcher and leader in the field of communication sciences and disorders and has been a valued mentor to me and many others," Stadler said. "As such, I am honored to receive the first Vicki Lord Larson Faculty Research Fellowship Award."
