Winter Carnival at UW-Eau Claire Set for Feb. 18-22

Winter Carnival logoEAU CLAIRE — The schedule of activities for Winter Carnival 2009 — "Let the Good Times Snow" — is set for Feb. 18-22 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Highlights include a comedy showcase featuring Comedy Central funny guys Sheng Wang and Chad Daniels, the fifth annual Mr. Freeze competition and a midnight screening of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." The celebration also features a number of outdoor recreation activities. Events are free unless noted.

Wednesday, Feb. 18:

  • Reigning "American Idol" David Cook, with special guest Ryan Star (concert is sold out); 7 p.m. in the Council Fire Room, Davies Center.

Thursday, Feb. 19:

  • Dogsledding demonstration on the lawn south of Davies Center; 1-3 p.m., weather permitting (ample snow required). Free rides will be given. Cosponsored by Outdoor Recreation.
  • "Inside" (2007), a neo-horror film from France screening through Sunday; 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., Davies Theatre. Tickets, which are $1 for UW-Eau Claire students and $2 for UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and International Film Society members, are available at the Service Center, 715-836-3727. International Film Society memberships are available for $4.
  • Mr. Freeze Pageant; 8 p.m., Higherground, Crest Wellness Center. A panel of judges will select the 2009 Winter Carnival royalty, Mr. Freeze, on the basis of talent, question-and-answer, winter apparel and formal wear. Awards will be given for first, second and third place; the application form is available online, at Higherground and at the Activities and Programs office in Davies Center. Entries must be received by 7 p.m. Thursday.

Friday, Feb. 20:

  • Chili Feed; 11 a.m.-1 p.m., veranda, Davies Center. Cosponsored by Outdoor Recreation. Pictures with the newly crowned Mr. Freeze will be taken on the Central Campus Mall throughout the afternoon.
  • Singer-Songwriter Slam; 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday in The Cabin, Davies Center. Anyone is welcome to sign up to perform, but no more than 20 people can perform each evening. Performers must arrive at or before 7:45 p.m. the night of the show. There is no advance sign up. All material must be original. Performers will play only one song, and the performance may not exceed seven minutes. Performances will be judged by three people selected at random from the audience and two people chosen in advance by the UAC. One winner will be named each evening. The two winners will each receive a paid local-talent spot at The Cabin and a Winter Carnival T-shirt.
  • Laugh Until the Ice Melts: Winter Carnival Comedy Show featuring Chad Daniels and Sheng Wang; 9 p.m., Higherground, Crest Wellness Center.
  • Winter Carnival Dance Party; 10 p.m., Higherground, Crest Wellness Center.
  • "The Rocky Horror Picture Show"; 11:59 p.m., Council Fire Room, Davies Center. Roger Ebert has called the 1975 cult film "not so much a movie as more of a long-running social phenomenon." Tickets are $7 ($4 for UW-Eau Claire students) at the Service Center and the door.

Saturday, Feb. 21:

  • Powder Puff Football Tournament; noon-3 p.m., Towers Field. Play is reserved for females. Register by 4 p.m. Feb. 17; complete rules and registration information is available online and at the Activities and Programs office in Davies Center.
  • Winter Carnival Dance Party; 10 p.m., Higherground, Crest Wellness Center.

Sunday, Feb. 22:

  • Half-price bowling; noon-11 p.m., Bowling and Billiards Center of Hilltop Center.
  • Rock Band Tournament; 5-8 p.m., Higherground, Crest Wellness Center.

Winter Carnival activities are sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate, and University Recreation & Sport Facilities, part of the UW-Eau Claire Division of Student Affairs.
