EAU CLAIRE — A Chippewa Falls native earned high honors for his mathematics research during a prestigious national conference last month in Washington, D.C.

University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire senior Mitch Phillipson won a poster award at the 2009 Joint Mathematics Meeting, an annual event that is the largest gathering of mathematicians in America. The conference is attended by members of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America.

Phillipson was honored for his poster titled "Extensions and Deformations of Associative Algebras." The 200-plus posters accepted by the Joint Mathematics Meeting were each reviewed by a panel of three experts. Phillipson's poster was among the 33 posters that received awards. Posters were judged on the appearance of the poster, the student's knowledge and the student's contributions to the results presented in the poster.

"Quite often, mathematicians do not have a good understanding of how much an undergraduate can accomplish in research so having these posters is a way of enlightening the community," Dr. Michael Penkava, professor of mathematics, said of including the posters in the national conference.

The quality work done by students like Phillipson is helping to change those views, Penkava said.

"I believe the contributions of our students have played a significant role in changing the attitude of mathematicians about undergraduate research," said Penkava.
