Counseling Services Announces Groups Offered for Spring Semester

RELEASED: Feb. 11, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Counseling Services is offering the following groups for the spring semester:

  • Asperger's Support Group: Time and dates to be determined. This small group is designed to allow students to share their experiences with Asperger's, build coping skills and provide support. Students should bring their class schedules to the intake interview for the group so a time can be scheduled that meets the needs of group members. Dr. P.J. Kennedy and Barb Deutscher are group facilitators.
  • Assertiveness Training: 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 24-April 7. Training in assertive social skills to increase interpersonal effectiveness. The goals include learning about interpersonal communication styles; building positive verbal and non-verbal assertion skills; developing the ability to say "no" more easily; and learning to give direct, non-judgmental feedback to others. Pete Chellman is the group facilitator.
  • Beginning Relationship Building: 10-10:50 a.m. Wednesdays, March 4-May 6. This small group focuses on practicing skills of greeting and exchanging information in a supportive environment. Group exercises and personal discussion/sharing will be included. Dr. Roberta Goodman is the group facilitator.
  • Body Love: 3-4:30 p.m. Thursdays, March 12-April 23. This group is for women struggling to accept themselves and their bodies. Women preoccupied with issues of weight, food and body dissatisfaction who want freedom from a low self-body image and obsession over weight and food, should consider joining Body Love: A Group for Women Searching for Body Acceptance. Dr. Adrienne Storm is the group facilitator.
  • Coping with Grief: 3-4:30 p.m. Tuesdays, March 24-April 7. Grief is a universal, common and yet unique experience. The expression of grief is essential for good emotional and physical health. Participants listen to each other in this group. Talking is therapy. Barb Deutscher is the group facilitator.
  • Eating Disorders Support Group: 3-4:15 p.m. Wednesdays, March 11-April 22. This group is for women suffering from an eating disorder (anorexia, bulimia, binge eating and disordered eating) who have been or are in treatment or who have been considering seeking treatment and need a safe place to share their experiences and receive support from other sufferers. This group is not meant to take the place of treatment nor is it a treatment group. The goal is to provide a healthy, non-judgmental atmosphere where participants can freely express their thoughts and feelings and work toward self acceptance. Dr. Adrienne Storm is the group facilitator.
  • Finding Hope: Time to be determined, Mondays, Feb. 23-May 4. This is an educational, cognitive and experiential group to discuss techniques and strategies for working through and alleviating depression. The supportive and confidential group is for students who struggle with depression. Terry Rogalla is facilitator.
  • First Offenders Alcohol Education Groups: These groups are offered on an as-needed basis by counseling staff. The program meets the requirements of the Eau Claire court's First Offender program. Contact Counseling Services for information about when groups are offered.
  • GLBTQ Support Group: 2-2:50 p.m. Wednesdays, March 4-May 6. The GLBTQ support group is a small, confidential and safe place to share successes and difficulties. The group will explore relationships and look at educational material as it pertains to the group discussions. Dr. Roberta Goodman is the facilitator.
  • Relaxation Techniques: 2-2:50 p.m. Tuesdays, March 3-May 5. The Relaxation Techniques group will focus on experiencing various shorter and time-managed visualization, relaxation, meditation and mindfulness exercises. It is a supportive group engaging in learning what exercises work best to achieve relaxation. Dr. Roberta Goodman is the facilitator.
  • Vets Supporting Vets: 5-6 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 23-May 11. This is a loosely structured support group where veterans can come together in a relaxed environment to assist each other with a variety of issues. If the group wishes, speakers may also be invited. USN quartermaster and USAR social work officer Terry Rogalla is the facilitator.

Dates noted above exclude the week of spring break. All groups require a 30-minute pre-registration appointment. Stop by the Counseling Services office at Old Library 2122 or call 715-836-5521 to set up a pre-registration appointment.
