UW-Eau Claire Named to Community Service
Honor Roll for Third Consecutive Year

RELEASED: Feb. 9, 2009

CNCS logo EAU CLAIRE — For the third consecutive year, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has been recognized for its outstanding community service programs by a federal agency charged with fostering an ethic of volunteerism and service in America.

Honor Roll sealUW-Eau Claire was among 83 public and private colleges, universities and professional schools named in the 2008 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction for General Community Service, compiled by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

The program is designed to increase public awareness of the contributions that college students are making within their communities and across the country through volunteer service.

UW-Eau Claire and Marquette University are the only two schools in Wisconsin named to the 2008 Honor Roll with Distinction. UW-Eau Claire is the only Wisconsin school, public or private, named to the Honor Roll with Distinction every one of the three years since the honor roll was instituted in 2006.

"This recognition is continued evidence of not only UW-Eau Claire's excellence in education but also excellence in commitment to the community and the university's importance in serving community needs," said Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich.

Among the other 83 schools named to the distinction list this year are Stanford University, George Washington University, Howard University, Bryn Mawr College, Tulane University, Carlton College, Hamline University, DePaul University, Macalester College, Cornell University, Syracuse University, Duke University, Ohio State University and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.

Nine other Wisconsin schools were named to the 2008 general honor roll: UW-Madison, UW-Parkside, UW-River Falls, Ripon College, Edgewood College, Lawrence University, Western Technical College, Northeast Wisconsin Technical College and Milwaukee Area Technical College.

Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Honorees for the award were chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovativeness of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.

Presented in concert with Campus Compact, the 2008 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll is jointly sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service through its Learn and Serve American program, the U.S. departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development, USA Freedom Corps and the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation.
