RELEASED: Feb. 3, 2009
EAU CLAIRE — "The Fountain" (2006), the third feature film by Darren Aronofsky ("Pi," "Requiem for a Dream"), will screen Feb. 12-15 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. An ambitious tale of immortality and the enduring power of love, the sci-fi parable will screen at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. in Davies Theatre.
Hugh Jackman stars as an oncology researcher determined to prevent the death of his novelist wife (Rachel Weisz) from brain cancer. His search for the fabled Tree of Life reaches back to 16th century Spain — the world where his wife's novel begins — and forwards to a chapter she asks him to write, requiring a 500-year odyssey toward a distant nebula.
"A romantic fantasy played out in three interlocking strands, 'The Fountain' sets out to do nothing less than dramatize the human ambition to transcend time and space in the form of a love story played out across several centuries," wrote The Onion A.V. Club. "It's a story of overreaching that itself overreaches, but that might have been impossible to avoid. Any film that concludes with an explosive demonstration of the universe's incomprehensible vastness wouldn't feel right if it felt perfect."
"To his credit, Mr. Aronofsky does not explain too much, and 'The Fountain' leaves a tantalizing sense of puzzlement in its wake," wrote The New York Times.
The University Activities Commission of the Student Senate will present the 96-minute film, rated PG-13.
Admission is $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty/staff, or $1 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in Davies Center's east lobby, and will be sold at the door.
Information about the film series is available online and at the Activities and Programs office in Davies Center.
