UW-Eau Claire to Host 'That Takes Ovaries: Bold Females and Their Brazen Acts'

RELEASED: Feb. 3, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — The Women's and Gender Equity Center at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will host a performance of "That Takes Ovaries: Bold Females and Their Brazen Acts" at 7 p.m. Feb. 24 in the Davies Theatre of Davies Center.

book cover for That Takes Ovaries: Bold Females and Their Brazen ActsBased on a book of the same name by Rivka Solomon and a play by Solomon and Bobbi Ausubel, the event will feature student volunteers reading "a collection of real-life stories from women and girls about the gutsy, outrageous, courageous things they have done."

After the performance, audience members will be invited to share stories about times they, or women they know, have acted boldly. Everyone who speaks will receive a chocolate egg wrapped in gold foil — a golden ovary.

Ausubel — who is now artistic director of the "That Takes Ovaries" organization, a grassroots movement for women's empowerment — will join in the performance at UW-Eau Claire. Community members and students can hear Ausubel speak at 2 p.m. Feb. 24 in the WAGE Center, Room 30 of Schofield Hall, on the topics of sex trafficking and second wave feminism.

The "That Takes Ovaries" performance is free, but donations will benefit the new UW-Eau Claire Children's Center.

Tiffany Gerber and Krystle Naab, co-coordinators of the WAGE Center, said the performance will kickoff Women's Herstory Month in March, which will feature The Vagina Monologues and other events.

"It is a unique presentation on women's experiences as it highlights the courage and perseverance of women in today's society," Naab said, noting that the "interactive and in-formative format is designed to open people's perspectives on the human experience."

Anyone who wants to volunteer to read or speak at "That Takes Ovaries" should contact Naab or Gerber at the WAGE Center, 715-836-2693, or wage@uwec.edu, by Feb. 13.
