American Marketing Association continues partnership with Special Olympics

RELEASED: Dec. 17, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire chapter of the American Marketing Association continued its partnership with the Special Olympics this semester by sponsoring events, raising money and working with Special Olympics athletes.

"The UW-Eau Claire chapter of AMA is talked about in Special Olympics fundraising circles around the country," said Andrea Sullivan, regional director of development for the Indianhead Area Special Olympics. "It is one of the few student groups to be a corporate sponsor of a nonprofit organization.

"They, along with 10 businesses in our 18-county region, are the ones who sponsor our competition and training events for our athletes."

This semester's volunteer activities included a bowling tournament and Pumpkin Fest. At the bowling tournament, students sold souvenirs and assisted the athletes in their lanes. Pumpkin Fest took place at Wilson Park in Eau Claire, where AMA students carved pumpkins, painted faces, worked concessions and helped with crafts and storytelling. According to Sullivan, the students set up and worked in a rainstorm that turned to snow.

"It was terrible weather, yet they never complained, and they kept showing up. I think that shows their commitment."

AMA soon will be promoting the Polar Plunge at Half Moon Beach, set for Feb. 28, 2010, and will later organize their biggest event of the year, the 28th annual AMA Fun Run at Carson Park. The spring event is a 5K walk/run/rollerblade race to raise money for Special Olympics. Food, music and beverages will be available after the race. The group also is assisting Sullivan with a February marketing campaign.

"Quite frankly, I am just plain impressed with the way UW-Eau Claire as a whole has embraced Special Olympics," said Sullivan.

Last year the UW-Eau Claire chapter of AMA was named Organization of the Year by the Indianhead Area Special Olympics. In addition to numerous volunteer hours, the UW-Eau Claire AMA donated $5,500 to Special Olympics.

More information about the UW-Eau Claire AMA chapter is available online.
