UW-Eau Claire student takes second place at Young Artist Competition

RELEASED: Dec. 4, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire senior Adam Koble, Waseca, Minn., was awarded second place at the Lakeshore Wind Ensemble Association's 22nd annual Young Artist Competition Nov. 7 in Manitowoc.

Koble, a music education major, played the second movement of Concerto for Bass Tuba: Romanza by Ralph Vaughan Williams for the competition. For his performance, Koble was awarded a scholarship of $750.

Koble decided to enter the competition after purchasing a new bass tuba. This type of tuba is pitched higher than the more common contrabass tuba, and is intended to be used for solo tuba repertoire.

"The reason I pursued this competition was to push me to learn the new horn well enough to perform on a high level as quickly as possible," Koble said. "My goal was to play my best and just have fun making music. The competition was very well organized and I definitely recommend it to other musicians."

Two other UW-Eau Claire musicians entered the Young Artist Competition — senior Kyle Siegrist, Green Bay, on trombone, and junior Michael Vanderscheuren, Madison, on saxophone.

Michael J. Arendt, the ensemble conductor and professor emeritus of music at UW-Manitowoc, established the competition as part of his profound dedication to encouraging and recognizing talented young musicians.

"The many high school and college students who have been part of the competition have demonstrated their dedication to the mastery of their instruments and have an obvious deep devotion and heartfelt passion for making beautiful music," said Linda Drumm Luchsinger, LWE administrator and organizer of the competition. "And our audiences have always been appreciative and amazed at the talent demonstrated by the winners of each years competition."
