Award-winning film 'C.R.A.Z.Y.' to screen

RELEASED: Dec. 3, 2009

poster for C.R.A.Z.Y.EAU CLAIRE — "C.R.A.Z.Y." (Canada 2005), winner of 11 Genie Awards, including one for Best Picture, will screen Dec. 10-13 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. An unsentimental family drama that unwinds over 20 years, Jean-Marc Vallée's exuberant debut film will be presented at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday in Davies Theatre.

The film's title is an acronym for the names of five brothers — Christian, Raymond, Antoine, Zachary and Yvan — growing up in a tight-knit Catholic household in Montreal. The focus of the film is Zac (Marc-André Grondin), born Christmas Day 1960, and the increasing strain on his relationship with his doting father (Michel Côté) as he grows up.

"When filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée first conceived this episodic coming-of-age story — about a young gay man living with four brothers and a strict, temperamental father in 1970s Montreal — he [initially] felt the only way to do it would be to translate the script into English and shoot it stateside," wrote CBC. "Given the film's distinctly Quebec flavour, it's hard to imagine Vallée having made it anywhere else."

A smash with critics and at the box office, "C.R.A.Z.Y." was named Best Canadian Film at the Toronto International Film Festival, and was chosen as Canada's official submission for the 2005 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. The film's use of music — iconic songs by David Bowie, Patsy Cline, Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones — is a particular standout.

The 127-minute film (in French, subtitled in English) is not rated.

Admission is free at the door with a Blugold Card or International Film Society membership. IFS memberships are available at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in Davies Center's east lobby.

More information about the campus film series is available online and at the Activities and Programs office, Davies Center 133.
