'Party House' Set for Sept. 3 at UW-Eau Claire

RELEASED: Aug. 28, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — Party House, a campuswide event designed to challenge first-year students' misperceptions about alcohol use, will be held at 5 p.m. Sept. 3, in Davies Center at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. This award-winning, interactive program highlights perceived use, abuse and potential consequences related to alcohol use.

Student volunteers will present an interactive program made up of a series of short vignettes demonstrating effective and ineffective means of dealing with issues important to all college students: communication; responsibility; and respect regarding alcohol, drugs and sexual behavior. Groups of about 60 students will enter the initial scene every five minutes and then be divided into smaller groups to participate in the vignettes. At the end they will have an opportunity to talk with a student facilitator about what they experienced.

Groups also will provide information and learning opportunities at a resource fair on the Campus Mall. Information about the dangers of alcohol abuse and alternate options for campus involvement, relaxation and recreation will be available.

MIke Green

Mike Green, a nationally recognized leader in drug and alcohol awareness and education, will present the program "Four Stages of Drinking" at 6:30 and 8 p.m. in Schofield Auditorium.

During the past 19 years, Green has presented on more than 2,000 campuses. He also has been a high school and college athlete and coach. As a defensive lineman, he earned All Pennsylvania Conference and All State Honors and a try-out with the Philadelphia Eagles. His background as an athlete, coach and educator helps him connect to youth. His firsthand experiences as a recovering alcoholic also give him the credibility to honestly relate the dangers drugs and alcohol pose for many students.

UW-Eau Claire sponsors of these events include Advising and New Student Initiatives, the Center for Alcohol Studies and Education, the First-Year Experience program, Housing and Residence Life, New Student Orientation, University Centers and Programs and the athletics department. Party House also is sponsored by the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
