EAU CLAIRE — With the goal of energizing new channels of interaction between its campus community, alumni and friends, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has launched a series of public profiles on three prominent social media venues.

UW-Eau Claire alumni and friends may now keep up with university news on Facebook, watch UW-Eau Claire-related videos on YouTube and receive mobile updates of both from Twitter.

"The nature of how we communicate as a society is fundamentally changing," said Mike Rindo, director of University Communications. "Individuals are bypassing traditional media and communicating directly with each other. Our increased use of social media reflects these changing dynamics and will enable us to more effectively reach those who have embraced social media as a primary source of information."

In an increasingly competitive environment, it is essential that the university take advantage of every opportunity to communicate with social media users, especially prospective students, Rindo said.

Over the last five years, Facebook has become a household name. With more than 250 million active users, Facebook is considered the most popular social networking site in most English-speaking countries. On Facebook, fans of UW-Eau Claire's public profile can read news updates, view photos, leave comments and participate in discussions. The UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association has also launched a public profile on Facebook.

YouTube, the popular online video community, allows users to watch and share videos. UW-Eau Claire's YouTube channel includes university promotional videos, orientation skits, poetry readings and student-created video projects. Users can subscribe to the channel and be notified whenever a new video is posted.

While relatively new to the social media scene, Twitter is rising in the ranks as one of the most popular social networking sites. Twitter is a free micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author's profile page and delivered to the author's subscribers who are known as followers. Because of the limited text space, this service is ideal for use on a mobile device. Users may register their mobile devices and send updates to their Twitter profiles as well as receive updates from other Twitter users via text message. UW-Eau Claire uses Twitter to post brief news updates and other important announcements. UW-Eau Claire's tweets can be found at Twitter.com.

In addition to UW-Eau Claire's official profiles, several other university units and organizations are active on these social media venues. Active on Facebook are UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education, Career Services and TV-10. The College of Business and Student Senate each have channels on YouTube, and the Spectator and the University Bookstore are tweeting on Twitter.
