UW-Eau Claire's Community Action Fair Set for Sept. 16

RELEASED: Aug. 24, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — Volunteer opportunities, internships and careers in the common good will be showcased at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Community Action Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 16 in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center.

The fair is sponsored by the Center for Service-Learning and the University Centers Community Engagement program. The goal of the event is to provide students with the opportunity to explore service-learning, volunteer opportunities and internships in the region's nonprofit sector.

"The fair, with its emphasis on service, reflects an important part of UW-Eau Claire's efforts to support community engagement, one of the goals of the university's strategic plan," said Paula Stuettgen, coordinator of the volunteer opportunities program.

Many of the represented agencies provide opportunities that enable student volunteers to receive credit or to fulfill the university's service-learning requirement. Internships and career opportunities offered by local, state and federal agencies and nonprofit organizations also are highlighted at the event.

"I like to tell students to find out what they have a passion for in life and then find a way to pursue it in service to others," said Donald Mowry, director of the Center for Service-Learning. "The Community Action Fair brings together a multitude of possibilities to consider."

Agencies and organizations will distribute information about their missions at the fair, and their representatives will be on hand to speak with students about volunteer opportunities, internships and careers in the common good. A series of speakers will be scheduled at pre-arranged times for classes. To arrange special presentations during the fair, instructors should contact the Center for Service-Learning by Sept. 14.

The Center for Service-Learning maintains a listing of projects that fulfill the university's service-learning requirement. The University Centers organizes community service initiatives for small and large groups of students during the year and maintains an online list at www.uwec.edu/centers/community/volunteer of regional volunteer-seeking agencies.

For more information about the Community Action Fair, contact the Center for Service-Learning at 715-836-4649 or the University Centers at 715-836-4803.
