UW-Eau Claire Places Second in Two Categories of RecycleMania

RELEASED: April 24, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — Each spring, college campuses across the country compete to determine what school can claim national supremacy for reducing, reusing and recycling the most campus waste.

UW-Eau Claire participated locally in the Wisconsin Competition Division along with eight other Wisconsin campuses and placed second in the Per Capita Classic and Gorilla Prize categories. The Per Capita Classic top five are determined by total pounds of recyclables collected per person over 10 weeks. The Gorilla Prize top five are determined by the highest cumulative weight of recyclables over 10 weeks. UW-Eau Claire collected 73.23 tons.

RecycleMania is administered by the National Recycling Coalition, as a project of NRC's College and University Recycling Council. RecycleMania is championed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's WasteWise program and the Coca-Cola Company.

Launched in 2001, RecycleMania began as a friendly challenge between Ohio University and Miami University to increase recycling on their campuses. The contest has expanded rapidly in eight years from two schools in 2001 to 510 colleges and universities in 2009. For complete contest background and details, visit the RecycleMania Web site.
