EAU CLAIRE — Spoken word artist Dasha Kelly (dashakelly.com) will be featured at a poetry showcase April 30 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Her 8 p.m. presentation in The Cabin is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the Student Senate, in conjunction with UW-Eau Claire's English Festival XIV. The event is free.

Kelly is a nationally respected advocate for writers and the art of the spoken word. She founded and directs Still Waters Collective, a resource network for language artists and enthusiasts. SWC has crafted programs and community initiatives that use creative writing and spoken word as tools to build leadership and shape self-esteem. Kelly's specialized training and development skills have been requested by schools, colleges, correctional institutions, nonprofit groups, corporate teams, artists and arts organizations.

Kelly is an accomplished writer and presenter. She has written for magazines such as Upscale, Black Enterprise and Milwaukee, and her narrative essays appear regularly online. Her 2003 novel, "All Fall Down," earned her a place in Written Word Magazine as one of the Top Ten Up-and-Coming Writers of the Midwest. She performed on the season six premiere of HBO Presents Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam, and her one-woman show, "Anthems for Grown Folks," is being developed into a traveling production. She recently released a collection of writings on Penmanship Books and is working on her second novel.

Born in Milwaukee, Kelly is a self-described "Army brat" who lived with her family in various locales around the world. She now resides in Milwaukee with her two daughters.
