EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire senior Jared Koerten, Plover, was recently awarded the 20th annual Karl Andresen Scholarship for the 2008-09 academic year.

The $2,500 scholarship is awarded each year to a graduating senior who demonstrates great potential for success in graduate or law school, said Dr. Rodd Freitag, chair of the political science department.

Koerten will graduate in May with a double major in history and economics and a minor in global studies. He plans to attend graduate school at The University of Chicago.

"We are very proud of the fact that Jared has decided to attend graduate school in the field of international relations after completing a global studies minor in our department," said Koerten's adviser, Dr. Stephen Hill, an associate professor of political science. "We believe his impressive academic achievements in the minor, together with his desire to continue to study in our discipline, make him a very deserving recipient of the Andresen Scholarship."

Hill described Koerten as an all-round outstanding student, with a current GPA of 3.98 in his majors of history and economics.

"His obvious intellectual ability, maturity and determination to succeed have been rewarded with a number of opportunities to study with university faculty," Hill said. "These have included two faculty-student research collaborations that have enabled him to develop his research skills and even present at regional conferences. He has also served on a number of occasions as course tutor or teaching assistant, further testimony to the high regard UW-Eau Claire faculty have for his maturity and intellectual prowess."

Koerten is a member of a number of honor societies and also has earned a variety of other academic awards and honors, including a National Merit Scholarship, a UW-Eau Claire Outstanding Senior Award, a Herb Kohl Educational Excellence Scholarship, a Wisconsin Academic Excellence Scholarship and a US Bancorp Educational Awards Scholarship.

Hill also mentioned what he described as Koerten's "deep desire to broaden his cultural awareness and understanding."

"During the summer of 2007 he participated in a UW-Eau Claire Central and East European Travel Seminar, an experience that obviously had a transformative effect on his appreciation for the political and economic perspectives of foreign states and cultures," Hill said.

Koerten has also accumulated significant work experience, including internships with the Eau Claire City Economic Development Division and the UW-Eau Claire Admissions Office. He served the student community by acting as a residence hall desk manager, student assistant at freshman orientation and president of the University Honors Program organization.

Dr. Karl Andresen taught in the political science department from 1956-1988 and was known for his warmth and geniality. The Karl Andresen Scholarship was established by his former students to recognize a graduating senior who has demonstrated academic excellence and the promise of future academic achievements.
