Tip Sheet for the week of Earth Week 2009

The UW-Eau Claire campus community will join the greater Eau Claire community in celebrating Earth Week by hosting a number of events on campus and in the community.

Events that may interest the media include:

  • Jennifer Jones, the National Wildlife Federation's vice president for strategic communications, will present "Unplug Your Kids: The Importance of Outdoor Time" from 4-5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23, in Davies Theatre. During the free event, Jones will talk about the NWF's recommendation that parents give their children a 'green hour' every day, a time for them to be outside interacting with nature.   • An Earth Month panel discussion on "Energy for a Sustainable Future" will run from 5-6:30 p.m. Monday, April 20, in the Presidents Room of Davies Center. The discussion will focus on a range of sustainable energy technologies and opportunities. Panelists include faculty members Dr. Christina Hupy from the geography and anthropology department, Dr. Kim Pierson from the physics and astronomy department, and Lori Snyder from the geology department.
  • An Earth Day green bag discussion about practical recycling methods will be presented Wednesday, April 22. "Home Recycling Dos and Don'ts" will be discussed by Eau Claire County recycling coordinator Jon Tulman from noon-1 p.m. in the Arrowhead Room of Davies Center. The presentation will be repeated from 4-5 p.m. in the Wisconsin Room of Davies Center.
  • People can bring batteries, used cell phones, ink cartridges and plastic bags to the Central Campus Mall for recycling from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. April 20-23. Also during that time, students and others will be available to make minor repairs to bikes. For information, contact student organizer Jay Nielsen at nielsenj@uwec.edu or 608-438-1979.
  • The movie "Who Killed the Electric Car" will screen at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, in Room 007 of Phillips Science Hall. The film "Energy Crossroads" will screen at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 23, in Room 007 of Phillips Hall. Lori Snyder, senior lecturer of geology, will lead a discussion following Thursday's film.
  • The Eau Claire Earth Day Celebration will take place from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, April 25, in Owen Park. Activities include live music, children's activities, local food vendors and other exhibits. Many UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff have helped plan Earth Month activities and events and will participate in the Earth Day celebration.
