UW-Eau Claire Wins Three Awards from
Association of College Unions International

RELEASED: April 20, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire received three awards in the 2009 associationwide promotion and marketing competition of the Association of College Unions International. Winning entries were exhibited and the awards presented at ACUI's 89th annual conference April 5-9 in Anaheim, Calif.

The awards recognize the work of UW-Eau Claire graduates Maria Nocenti and Sarah Hicks, both of Green Bay. Both artists created the work while employed in the University Centers information design services area.

logo for Fresh Start Farmers MartIn the professional division, Nocenti received first place for her promotional campaign for Fresh Start Farmers Mart, a mini farmers market presented on campus each week in September and October. She was also given honorable mention for the program's logo design, which recalls the vintage labels found on fruit and vegetable crates. Posters and flyers promoted the series, and stickers were created for paper bags given to customers. The Fresh Start Farmers Mart logo was printed on an eco-friendly canvas tote sold in the University Bookstore and at the campus farmers market, which provides local food producers with a campus sales outlet and introduces students to the companion event in downtown Eau Claire.

cover for The Forum and Artists SeriesIn the student division, Hicks received a third-place award for her promotional campaign for the 2008-09 season of the Artists Series and The Forum. The campaign's central piece was a 24-page booklet that unified the diverse slate of lecture and performing arts events into a cohesive series. Other components of the award-winning entry were print advertisements, a wallet-card event schedule, a background for a display case, season sales and event flyers, an event program, and posters promoting discount-priced tickets for students and thanking the programs' community partners.

Hicks worked in the University Centers information design area for a year before receiving her bachelor of fine arts degree in graphic design in December 2008. Nocenti received her graphic design BFA in December 2007 and was employed in the information design area from September 2004 until August 2008.

A Student Affairs unit of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the University Centers is a longtime member of the Association of College Unions International. ACUI has served the college union and student activities field since 1914, and its members represent nearly 1,000 campuses around the world. The annual Steal This Idea competition awards excellence in college union and student activities graphics and marketing materials.

Visit the ACUI Web site for a complete list of award winners. The winners will be featured in the July 2009 issue of ACUI's magazine, The Bulletin.
