Dr. Yoichiro Mori, an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, will be the distinguished visiting speaker. His research interests are in the areas of mathematical modeling of biophysical systems, numerical and applied analysis, and scientific computing.

At 7:30 p.m. April 20 Mori will give the Andrew Balas Lecture, named for a UW-Eau Claire mathematics professor who died in 2008 after 24 years of teaching at UW-Eau Claire. Mori's lecture is titled "Research in Mathematical Biology." Mathematics plays an ever increasing role in biology, and Mori will describe the challenges in applying mathematics to biology, drawing on examples primarily from electrophysiology.

At 2 p.m. April 21 Mori will give a lecture titled "On the Representation of an Incompressible Linearly Elastic Material as a Collection of Fibers." It will be more technical in nature; an abstract can be found in the schedule posted on the math department's Web site.

All events are free and open to the public.

The Mathematics Retreat is sponsored by the UW-Eau Claire's mathematics department, Math Club and Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.
