for the Week of April 20

RELEASED: April 14, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances the week beginning April 20. All events are free and open to the public.

Monday, April 20:

  • Senior Angela Roehl, New London, will present a flute recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Assisted on piano by Roger Bethard, Roehl will begin her performance with "Petite Valse" and "Reverie" by André Caplet and Sonata Undine Op. 167 by Carl Reinecke. The second half of the performance will begin with "Mei" by Kazuo Fukushima. The recital will conclude with Aaron Copland's Duo for Flute and Piano.

Tuesday, April 21:

  • The Wind Chamber Ensembles will present a joint student recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall. The students will perform selections by Mozart, Claude Debussy, Robert Washburn, and Camille Saint-Saens. The Wind Chamber Ensembles are comprised of 16 student performers in the music and theatre arts department.

Wednesday, April 22:

  • Senior Allison Wells, Eau Claire, will present her senior degree soprano voice recital at 5 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Assisted on piano by Stephanie Schmidt, Wells will begin with Beethoven's "Wonne der Wehmut," Op. 83 and "Ariettes Oubliées" by Claude Debussy. The second half will begin with performances "Drei Lieder der Ophelia," Op. 67 by Richard Strauss and "Four Poems by Tennyson" by Ned Rorem. The final two selections will be Albert Hay Malotte's "The Twenty-Third Psalm" and "O luce di quest' anima" by Gaetano Donizetti.
  • BASSically Brass and the Trombone Ensemble will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The performance will begin with the BASSically Brass tuba and euphonium ensemble, which will present selections by Glenn Martin, Oscar Petersen, Rich Matteson and others. The BASSically Brass ensemble consists of 14 music students and is directed by Jerry Young, professor of music. The second half will feature the Trombone Ensemble, with performances of works by Gustav Mahler, Johannes Brahms and others. The Trombone Ensemble is made up of 16 music students and is directed by Phillip Ostrander, assistant professor of music.

Thursday, April 23:

  • Sophomore Nichole Brellenthin, Burnsville, Minn., and senior Amy Mutschler, Prescott, will present a trombone and trumpet recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Assisted on piano by Anne Kubiatowicz, Brellenthin and Mutschler will perform selections by Norman Bolter, Arcangelo Corelli, Jules Massenet and others.

Sunday, April 26:

  • The Chamber Orchestra, directed by Tulio Rondón, assistant professor of music, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The concert will begin with Arcangelo Corelli's Concerto Grosso in C Major. Next will be Concerto Grosso in B Minor and D Minor by Antonio Vivaldi. The performance will conclude with Concerto Grosso in G Major by George F. Handel.
