Several Events Scheduled for Global Youth Service Day

RELEASED: April 13, 2009

Global Youth Service Day bannerEAU CLAIRE — The Center for Service-Learning at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will hold several events as part of Global Youth Service Day, a day to focus the world's attention on the contributions that young people make to others every day of the year.

The Campus Kitchen at UW-Eau Claire will sponsor a cookout from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. April 26 at the Carson Park Oak Pavilion. For a $5 donation, campus and community members can enjoy burgers and brats, door prizes and children's games. Proceeds will benefit the Campus Kitchen, a student-run initiative that recovers extra food from campus dining operations, local restaurants and other food providers to serve meals to people in need.

A Hunger Banquet will begin at 7 p.m. April 28 in The Dulany in Davies Center. The grant-funded event will raise awareness of hunger and disparities in the world by giving people a sense of what it is like to live in poverty. Participants will experience the differences between typical meals for low-income, middle-income or upper-income global citizens.

"At any given moment, there are 854 million people in the world suffering from hunger, and every day 30,000 children under the age of 5 die of preventable causes, including malnutrition," said Dylan Thomas, an AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteer who is helping to organize the event. "By participating in Oxfam America's Hunger Banquet, we're doing our part to try to change the reality faced by poor people across the world."

To reserve a spot for the free banquet, contact Thomas at 715-836-4649 or thomasdp@uwec.edu. Donations for the Campus Kitchen will be accepted at the banquet.

Jumpstart Eau Claire AmeriCorps members also will do a variety of community service projects for area non-profit agencies on April 25. The organizations receiving the contributions include REACH Inc., Habitat for Humanity, L.E. Phillips Senior Center, Hope Gospel Mission, Bethesda Thrift Shop, Goodwill Enterprises, YMCA Head Start, UW-Eau Claire Children's Center, Altoona Head Start, and Eau Claire Parks and Recreation Department.
