'MirrorMask' Fantasy Adventure to Screen During Blugold Family Weekend

RELEASED: April 9, 2009

poster for MirrorMaskEAU CLAIRE — "MirrorMask" (2005), a live-action and elaborately animated fantasy adventure, will screen at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire April 23-26. Chosen by the University Activities Commission of the Student Senate to complement Blugold Family Weekend activities, it will be presented at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. all four days in Davies Theatre.

Helena (Stephanie Leonidas) is a 15-year-old girl who works for her family circus and wishes — ironically — that she could run away and join real life. Instead, after a fight with her mother (Gina McKee) she finds herself on a strange journey into the Dark Lands, a fantastic landscape filled with giants, monkeybirds and dangerous sphinxes. She searches for the MirrorMask, an object of great power that is her only hope of going back home.

"If 'The Wizard of Oz' were reborn in the 21st century, it might look a lot like 'MirrorMask,'" wrote The Hollywood Reporter. "A product of the Jim Henson laboratory, the film is endlessly inventive with creativity to burn ... that rare animal that is sure to charm kids and also intrigue adults with its imagination."

The Philadelphia Inquirer described the imaginative fable as "a dazzling, surrealist concoction full of talking sphinxes and flying books, bizarro penguins, ooky one-eyed spiders, beautiful ink drawings that spring to life, and creatures of all stripes and sizes that look as if they were sculpted by Dali, or Bosch, or a kid with a really warped imagination."

Created by award-winning cult author Neil Gaiman and his longtime collaborator, artist/director Dave McKean, the 101-minute film is rated PG for mildly scary images.

Admission is $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff. Tickets are $1 for UW-Eau Claire students and any guests they bring to the special Family Weekend screening. Tickets are available at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in Davies Center's east lobby, and will be sold at the door.

Visit the University Activities Commission Web page or the Activities and Programs office, Davies Center 133, for more information about the campus film series.
