EAU CLAIRE — Eleven University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire American Marketing Association student members traveled to New Orleans for the 31st annual International Collegiate Conference to compete against 146 universities from across North America and to become better prepared to launch successful marketing careers.

This was the first year the UW-Eau Claire American Marketing Association has competed as a national chapter in more than a decade. The chapter received an honorable mention in the Chapter Recruitment Video Competition, was given an overall ranking of 10th out of 145 international chapters, and was recognized as an Outstanding Chapter.

The Outstanding Chapter award is given to only eight schools internationally and recognizes outstanding performance in all areas evaluated: professional development, membership activities and recruitment, internal and external communications, community service, fundraising, and organizational strategic planning.

Students who participated were Jennifer Forsythe, Iron River; Carmen Micke and Andrew Simon, Green Bay; Eric Gustafson, Waukesha; Rachel Roberts and Nikole Bryson, Elkhorn; Travis Messerschmidt, Marshfield; Lindsey Taylor, Apple Valley, Minn.; Aaron Schmitz, Jim Falls; Heidi Becker, Turtle Lake; and Jaimie Hoeschen, St. Michael, Minn.

The March 26-28 conference offered students the opportunity to meet with representatives from other AMA chapters as well as recruiters, who shared their stories and tips for success in special roundtable discussions.

The students also had networking opportunities with industry veterans and recruiters, and had their choice of top industry speakers throughout the conference. In addition, multiple sessions offered students strategies for improving their chapters and themselves. The conference concluded with a traditional business attire banquet where awards for various competitions and the top chapters of 2008-09 were announced.

"This is a truly extraordinary win for a chapter new to the competition," said Scott Swanson, interim UW-Eau Claire AMA adviser and assistant professor of marketing.

Swanson said since the chapter is new to the competition, there are areas that could be improved upon and additional competitions in which to become involved.

"All of the AMA members should take great pride in this award," Swanson said.
