New Fundraising Event to Help Support WYSP at UW-Eau Claire

RELEASED: April 6, 2009

WYSP logoEAU CLAIRE — It's almost time to register boys and girls ages 10-16 for the Wisconsin Youth Sports Program, held annually on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

This year the award-winning free summer sports camp will run June 9-July 10. Registration will begin April 13.

Formerly known as the National Youth Sports Program, WYSP is held Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. (including transportation time). No camp will be held July 1-3.

This will be the 29th year the program will be offered by University Recreation & Sport Facilities. It will again provide area youth with opportunities to learn sports skills and receive information about issues relating to drugs and alcohol, nutrition, careers, math, science and higher education. Participants receive a free medical and dental exam, transportation (for students residing in Eau Claire or Altoona school districts) and breakfast and lunch each day.

Special opportunities are available to 13-16-year-old participants, including training in the Crest Fitness Center, access to the climbing wall, and guidance in resume writing and personal finance.

This year, WYSP campers, along with their families and friends, can participate in a new fundraising event to help support WYSP. Participants can be among the first to try the new Chaos Water Park on Eau Claire's south side. From 4-9 p.m. May 21, a portion of the entrance fee will benefit WYSP. Fees are $13.95 for entrance and a water park pass, or $5 for entrance without water park use. The event will include water park fun and duck races. Food and beverages also will be available. More information will be available soon on the WYSP Web site.

Donations to help support the local WYSP program can be made through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation. A mail-in form is available on the WYSP Web site or donations can be made online through the Foundation Web site. Indicate the donation is in support of WYSP.

To register for WYSP, call 715-836-3377 or 715-836-3378 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, beginning April 13.
