'La Vie en Rose' to Screen April 16-19 at UW-Eau Claire

RELEASED: April 6, 2009

poster for La Vie en Rose EAU CLAIRE — "La Vie en Rose" (2007), a swirling, impressionistic portrait of legendary singer Edith Piaf (1915-1963), will screen April 16-19 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Anchored by an Oscar-winning performance by Marion Cotillard, the film will be shown at 6 and 8:30 p.m. all four days in Schofield Auditorium.

Raised in her grandmother's brothel, Edith Piaf was discovered on Paris streets in 1935 by a nightclub impresario (Gerard Depardieu) who persuaded her to sing despite her extreme nervousness. Piaf became one of France's immortal icons, her voice one of the indelible signatures of the 20th century.

"Most music biopics follow a familiar arc," wrote the Philadelphia Inquirer, "a childhood of pain and poverty, false steps and shaky beginnings, a mentor or two, wild times on the road, discovery, debauchery, success, fame, death. But this brilliant account of the life of Edith Piaf the French songbird, born of the streets and the brothels, who became a cultural icon for a nation visits the usual benchmarks, juggles them around, emphasizes sharp detail over seismic events, and delivers the portrait of a life that is vividly, explosively real."

"Marion Cotillard, lip-syncing Piaf's songs and digging into her soul with gale-force urgency, gives a performance for the ages," wrote Rolling Stone.

Written and directed by Olivier Dahan, the 140-minute film is subtitled in English and rated PG-13.

The film is sponsored by the International Film Society. Admission is $2 for IFS members and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and $1 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in Davies Center's east lobby and will be sold at the door.

Visit University Activities Commission Web site or the Activities and Programs office, Davies Center 133, for more information about the campus film series.
