Campus Community Supports City of Eau Claire Sustainability Efforts

RELEASED: April 1, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — A number of University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire faculty, staff and students joined Eau Claire community members in a series of workshops during fall 2008 to talk about the importance of sustainability to the citys future.

The campus and community participants shared their expertise and ideas with city of Eau Claire planners as they developed a chapter on sustainability to add to city's Comprehensive Plan.

An Eau Claire Planning Commission public hearing on the draft of the sustainability chapter is set for 7 p.m. April 6 in the Council Chamber at Eau Claire City Hall.

"Sustainability is a priority on our campus and we are pleased that it's also a priority for the Chippewa Valley," said Dr. Kate Hale, UW-Eau Claire's sustainability fellow. "Our city planners sought community input to help identify ways to increase our efforts to create a more sustainable future. Many members of the campus community stepped forward to be part of the process and our city planners welcomed their contributions."

Topics addressed in the draft of the sustainability chapter include energy, local food, environmental conservation, atmosphere, waste management, strong and healthy community, sustainable development, balanced transportation, greener economy and sustainable government.

The sustainability chapter will go to theEau Claire City Council for a final decision following the public hearing.
