Japanese Sci-Fi Film 'Casshern' to Screen Oct. 9-12 at UW-Eau Claire

RELEASED: Sept. 30, 2008

poster for CasshernEAU CLAIRE — "Casshern" (Japan 2004), a live-action sci-fi thriller based on a Japanese anime, will be presented Oct. 9-12 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Directed by Kazuaki Kiriya, the film will screen at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Thursday-Sunday in Davies Theatre.

"Casshern" is set in the late 21st century, as life on war-ravaged Earth is threatened by environmental disaster and incurable disease. A geneticist discovers a neo-cell that can rejuvenate the human body, but it is used by an evil corporation to create a race of mutants determined to annihilate humanity. A powerful superhero, Casshern, emerges in the battle against the new menace.

Variety wrote that the film "gleefully filters everything from Biblical and Norse legend to '30s Nazi paraphernalia and 'Star Wars' hardware through a deliberately grungy manga filter. ... The sheer execution and visual inventiveness is frequently jaw-dropping, and the energy and leaps of imagination purely Asian. Though the drama is driven by the human cast, the action melds humans, CGI and a wide range of animation techniques (from simple cut-outs to claymation) in which it's impossible to draw boundaries. 'Casshern' is a movie where the viewer really does have to simply go with the flow."

Presented by the International Film Society, the 141-minute film is subtitled in English and not rated.

Admission is $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and $1 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in Davies Center's east lobby, and will be sold at the door.

Tickets for all campus events are also on sale at the Service Center's ticket office in the main lobby of Haas Fine Arts Center. The ticket outlet is open Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and is closed during holidays and academic breaks.
