New Online Directory Helps UW-Eau Claire Students Find Chippewa Valley Internships

RELEASED: Sept. 25, 2008

EAU CLAIRE — With the introduction of a new Web site, a partnership between the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and the city of Eau Claire continues to help university students find internships, and often ultimately full-time employment, with local businesses.

Each year since 2002, through the "Come for College, Stay for a Career" project, a joint effort of the university's Career Services office and the city's Economic Development Division, UW-Eau Claire students have received the printed "Chippewa Valley Employer Guide," which lists area employers offering internships for university students seeking work experience in their fields of study. Now, for the first time, the information is available via a searchable online directory.

"By putting this online and getting it into a database, we're presenting the information in a format that will reach many more students, and therefore it will be much more beneficial to the employers listed," said Mike Schatz, economic development director with the city of Eau Claire's Economic Development Division.

The focus of the online directory, like the printed directory produced in previous years, is on keeping talented graduates in the area, said Jeanne Skoug, UW-Eau Claire Career Services director.

"If we can get students into local businesses through internships, that can encourage them to stay in the Chippewa Valley after graduation," Skoug said.

In addition, the directory is a way for employers to tap into a talented pool of students whose skills can be beneficial to area businesses, she said.

Currently 75 employers are included in the online directory, which is searchable by academic major, type of opportunity sought (internship; job-shadowing experience; part-time, full-time or seasonal employment; or volunteer experience) and/or employer.

Employers interested in being listed in the online directory can contact Dagmar Beckel-Machyckova in the city's Economic Development Division at 715-839-4914 or beckeld@eauclairewi.gov.
