Counseling Services Announces Fall Counseling Groups Schedule

RELEASED: Sept. 15, 2008

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Counseling Services will offer the following counseling groups for the fall 2008 semester.

  • ADD/ADHD Support Group: Oct. 15-Nov. 19, Wednesdays, 3-4:30 p.m.
    This six-session group will help recognize strengths and weaknesses, address self-esteem and put criticism in its place, improve relationships, and improve time management and organizational skills. Pete Chellman is group facilitator.
  • Assertiveness Skills Group: Oct. 6-Nov. 10, Mondays, 2-3:30 p.m.
    This is a six-session group with training in assertive social skills. Participants will learn to express themselves and feel good about doing so without hurting others in the process. Pete Chellman is group facilitator.
  • Beginning Relationship Building: Oct. 2-Dec. 11, Thursdays, 2-2:50 p.m.
    This small group will focus on practicing skills of greeting and exchanging information in a highly supportive environment. Group exercises and personal discussion/sharing will be included. Dr. Roberta Goodman is group facilitator.
  • Coping with the Blues: Oct. 6-Nov. 24, Mondays, 3:30-4:30 p.m.
    This is an educational, cognitive and experiential group to discuss techniques, ideas and strategies for working through down times. It is a supportive group environment for college students. Dr. Roberta Goodman is the group facilitator.
  • Coping with Grief: Oct. 21-Nov. 4, Tuesdays, 3-4:30 p.m.
    Grief is a universal, common and yet unique experience. The expression of grief is essential for good emotional and physical health. Participants will listen to each other in this three-session group. Talking is therapy. Barb Deutscher is group facilitator.
  • First Offenders Alcohol Education Groups: These are offered on an as-needed basis and facilitated by Counseling Services staff. This program meets the requirements of the Eau Claire courts' "First Time Offender" program. Call or stop by the Counseling Services office for more information.
  • Happier: Sept. 25-Dec. 18, Thursdays, 4-5 p.m.
    Grounded in the positive psychology movement, this group will apply the combination of scholarly research and self-help advice found in the test "Happier" to promote personal fulfillment. Dr. P.J. Kennedy is group facilitator.
  • LGBTQ Support Group: date and time set according to students' schedules.
    The support group is a small, confidential and safe place to share success and difficulties. The group will explore relationships and look at educational material as it pertains to the group discussions. Dr. Roberta Goodman is group facilitator.
  • Mindfulness/Meditation/Relaxation: Oct. 8-Nov. 12, Wednesdays, 2-2:50 p.m.
    The group will focus on experiencing various shorter and time-managed visualization, relaxation, meditation and mindfulness exercises. It is a supportive group engaging in learning what exercises work best to achieve relaxation. Dr. Roberta Goodman is group facilitator.
  • Veteran's Support Group: Sept. 24-Dec. 17, Wednesdays, 4-5 p.m.
    This is an unstructured support group. Speakers may be brought in as the group wishes. Dr. P.J. Kennedy, a U.S. Navy Medical Corpsman, 1968-1971, is group facilitator.
