Hispanic Heritage Month Reception to Kick Off Month of Activities

RELEASED: Sept. 12, 2008

EAU CLAIRE — A Sept. 16 reception will kick off Hispanic Heritage Month activities at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Office of Multicultural Affairs and Student Organization of Latinos/as will sponsor the Hispanic Heritage Month Welcome Reception, which will run from 3:30-5 p.m. in the Presidents Room of Davies Center.

Students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to enjoy Latin American appetizers, music and educational displays.

Additional events scheduled for Hispanic Heritage Month and Latin American Studies Week are as follows:

  • Sept. 25 — "Latinas in Film," presented by Dr. Eva Santos-Phillips, professor of Spanish, 3:30-5:30 p.m., Presidents Room, Davies Center.
  • Sept. 29 — Movie and discussion with Dr. Manuel Fernandez, assistant professor of Spanish, on Latina immigrants in Los Angeles, 2-5 p.m., Tamarack Room, Davies Center.
  • Oct. 6 — Latin American Studies Week keynote and reception with Enrique Morones of Border Angels, 5:30-7:30 p.m., The Dulany, Davies Center. (A cash bar will be open for one hour beginning at 5:30 p.m.) Border Angels is an organization dedicated to preventing the deaths of people attempting to enter the United States by traveling through dangerous desert and mountain regions along the border between the United State and Mexico. Morones will discuss the issues involved when this humanitarian mission collides with U.S. law and the need to establish a fair immigration policy.
  • Oct. 7 — El Fortin presentation by the student organization Latin American Sustainability, Education and Development, 4-5:30 p.m., Oneida Room, Davies Center. The group will present on the various fund-raising efforts they have undertaken to benefit the village of El Fortin in Nicaragua.
  • Oct. 8 — "Hip Hop in Cuba," presented by Betsy Lorenz, a senior Latin American studies major who has been researching the development of hip hop in Cuba, 6-7:30 p.m., Presidents Room, Davies Center.
  • Oct. 9 — 4th annual Sabor Latino Luncheon, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., The Dulany, Davies Center; and "Latino Immigrants in Wisconsin: Myths and Realities," an interdisciplinary forum on the issues, 4-5:15 p.m., Room 100 of Hibbard Humanities Hall.
  • Oct. 17 — Latin dance, 7-11 p.m., Tamarack Room, Davies Center.
  • Oct. 22 — Study Abroad Spotlight: Spanish Speaking Programs, 4 p.m., Arrowhead Room, Davies Center.

Hispanic Heritage Month and Latin American Studies Week events are sponsored by the Latin American Studies program, foundations of education department, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the departments of economics, English, foreign languages, history, political science and sociology, and the College of Arts and Sciences. Morones' visit is made possible by a grant from the UW System Institute on Race and Ethnicity. The keynote dinner is made possible by a grant from UW-Eau Claire Foundation.
