2007-08 Was Banner Publication Year for
UW-Eau Claire Biology Department

RELEASED: Sept. 11, 2008

EAU CLAIRE — The 2007-08 school year was a banner publishing year for the biology department at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Nine faculty members and six undergraduate students were involved in the publication of 16 journal articles and three other faculty members authored or contributed to three texts or reference books.

Covering topics that included everything from fish and butterflies to megadroughts in Africa, antibiotic resistance in bacteria, and human anatomy and physiology, the journal articles appeared in such publications as Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Journal of the Lepidopterist's Society, Great Lakes Entomologist, The American Biology Teacher, Review of Palaeobotany and Palynology, Journal of Chemotherapy, Restoration Ecology and others.

Published texts included "Laboratory Studies for the Biology of Humans," 2nd edition, by Dr. Darwin Wittrock, chair of the biology department; a contribution on Prunus (Rosaceae) to "Flora of North America," Vol. 9, by Dr. Joseph Rohrer; and "An Investigation of Human Anatomy and Physiology," 2nd edition, by Mitchell Freymiller.

"Although teaching is our number one priority, scholarly activity has become a very important part of faculty jobs at UW-Eau Claire," said Wittrock. "I am especially happy to see that many of the research projects undertaken by biology faculty have involved undergraduate students. These students have learned about the joys and frustrations of scientific research, and many have used their involvement in research as a stepping stone to professional or graduate studies in the biological sciences."
